LAKE WALES – Hungry for pancakes? Polk Avenue Elementary will host a delicious pancake breakfast sponsored by IHOP on Saturday, May 8. The pancake breakfast will take place from 8-11 a.m. in the school’s Polk Avenue Café. Tickets are $5, and may be purchased at the door on May 8 or in advance from the school office. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. Proceeds from the event will help buy school supplies for next year.

LAKE WALES – Calling all serious fishermen! Lake Wales FFA is planning its Fifth Annual Open Bass Tournament for Saturday, May 22. The tournament will take place at Camp Mack, beginning at first light. The tournament ends at 2 p.m. Awards will be: first place 50 percent; second place 30 percent; and third place 20 percent. Entry fee is $50 per boat. The $10 Big Bass per person is included in the fee. Big bass will pay back 100 percent.

LAKE WALES – Bok Academy students are growing accustomed to rocket launches and celebrity speakers on their campus. This month, for the school’s second annual Bok Rocket Launch, ret. Air Force Lt. LAKE WALES – Downtown Lake Wales will become one big fundraiser on Saturday, as local residents look for creative ways to help a Babson Park boy who has spent the past several months in the hospital. Fourth grader Andrew Rose is undergoing treatment for stage four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. He first began receiving treatments in December. LAKE WALES – Denise Moss wears many hats at Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary. She is the school’s administrative assistant, principal’s secretary and finance secretary. She manages the books for the school’s preschool program, and she serves as chair of the School Advisory Committee. LAKE WALES – Hillcrest Elementary kindergarten students learned how to combine the science of gardening with the math of retailing when they needed to get rid of a bumper crop of sweet onions. The Vidalia onions flourished in the Kinder-Garden at Hillcrest Elementary. Students produced so many onions this spring that they sold their harvested crop to school staff members for a $2 donation.
