Polk Avenue plans May 8 pancake breakfast

LAKE WALES – Hungry for pancakes? Polk Avenue Elementary will host a delicious pancake breakfast sponsored by IHOP on Saturday, May 8. The pancake breakfast will take place from 8-11 a.m. in the school’s Polk Avenue Café. Tickets are $5, and may be purchased at the door on May 8 or in advance from the school office. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. Proceeds from the event will help buy school supplies for next year.

Lake Wales FFA hosts Open Bass Tournament

LAKE WALES – Calling all serious fishermen! Lake Wales FFA is planning its Fifth Annual Open Bass Tournament for Saturday, May 22. The tournament will take place at Camp Mack, beginning at first light. The tournament ends at 2 p.m. Awards will be: first place 50 percent; second place 30 percent; and third place 20 percent. Entry fee is $50 per boat. The $10 Big Bass per person is included in the fee. Big bass will pay back 100 percent.

Hillcrest bakers take the cake

Bok rocket program skyrockets with enthusiasm

LAKE WALES – Bok Academy students are growing accustomed to rocket launches and celebrity speakers on their campus. This month, for the school’s second annual Bok Rocket Launch, ret. Air Force Lt. Gen. James A. Abrahamson returned to speak to students and offer encouragement. In the early 1980s, Abrahamson was responsible for the nation’s space shuttle program, leading it safely through 10 developmental and early operational launches. Saturday fundraiser planned for Babson Park student

LAKE WALES – Downtown Lake Wales will become one big fundraiser on Saturday, as local residents look for creative ways to help a Babson Park boy who has spent the past several months in the hospital. Fourth grader Andrew Rose is undergoing treatment for stage four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. He first began receiving treatments in December. Denise Moss named top Charter School support employee

LAKE WALES – Denise Moss wears many hats at Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary. She is the school’s administrative assistant, principal’s secretary and finance secretary. She manages the books for the school’s preschool program, and she serves as chair of the School Advisory Committee. For 13 years, she has coordinated Babson Park’s Five Star Schools application to the State of Florida. She mentors a kindergarten student and she organizes numerous community food drives. LWHS Young Leaders tour Tallahassee, visit Capitol

LAKE WALES – A group of Young Leaders from Lake Wales High School got a first-hand look at government in action last week when they visited the State Senate during busy days of the legislative session. During their two-day visit (April 14-15) to Tallahassee, the Young Leaders toured the State Capitol, met with Lake Wales Sen. J.D. Babson Park celebrates Culyer Reading Program

Hillcrest farmers sell onion crop from Kinder-Garden

LAKE WALES – Hillcrest Elementary kindergarten students learned how to combine the science of gardening with the math of retailing when they needed to get rid of a bumper crop of sweet onions. The Vidalia onions flourished in the Kinder-Garden at Hillcrest Elementary. Students produced so many onions this spring that they sold their harvested crop to school staff members for a $2 donation.
