LAKE WALES – Special Olympics athletes from Lake Wales High School won prizes in several events at the recent State Summer Games at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex.
Reynaldo Cadena, Dontae Carter, Erin Spear and James VanCamp won gold medals for their 4×100 relay team.
In the 100-meter run, Spear won a gold medal. VanCamp won a silver medal, and Carter and Cadena both received bronze medals.

PHOTO #1: BABSON PARK – Students in Robin Jolley’s class are serious about reading. Since the beginning of the year, the Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary first graders have been reading books and completing “response forms” to earn sashes and badges. The class mascot is Franklin the Turtle, and every badge – earned by finishing five books and forms – features a different animal friend of Franklin’s. LAKE WALES – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary students took advantage of their surroundings earlier this month when the school-wide Earth Day celebration left campus for the adjacent Grassy Lake Preserve.
Volunteers from community environmental groups led students on guided trail walks in the 185-acre Grassy Lake Preserve, which is adjacent to the elementary school campus. The Earth Day event was held May 7.

LAKE WALES – Hillcrest Elementary scientists devoted an entire day studying the energy that warms their planet and lights their world.
“The Solar Energy Day program was a special day for all our fifth grade students,” said Heather Teague, the school’s Science Lab Resource teacher.
Pizza Hut donated small pizza boxes, which gave students a base to build individual solar ovens using aluminum foil, plastic wrap and tape. During Solar Energy Day, each student cooked a hotdog in their oven.

LAKE WALES – The theme for Janie Howard Wilson Elementary’s recent Kindergarten Support Family Night was “All About Me,” but the evening quickly became all about smiles for children and families at the year-end event.
