First graders fired up about fire safety

Nov 9th, 2012

LAKE WALES –Janie Howard Wilson Elementary first graders are fired up about fire safety after a special training last month from Polk County Firefighter Kent Van Hook.

(PHOTO #1) One classmate, De’Shun McNeil, tried on child-size firefighter gear and posed for a photo with Van Hook.  De’Shun also demonstrated how to crawl on the ground when there might be a lot of smoke.

Students learned about the importance of smoke alarms, ways to prevent fires, and how to escape a house fire.  All the students received a firefighter hat, smoke alarm bracelet, and fire safety worksheet from the Polk County Fire Department.
