LAKE WALES – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary fourth graders experienced the sound of a cracking bullwhip Wednesday (Feb. 6) when a real cowboy Brandon Mathews helped students understand their book “A Land Remembered” by Patrick Smith.

Mathews brought three bullwhips and put on a captivating demonstration for students.

“One of the main characters in the book also uses a whip to herd cattle, protect his family and provide dinner, so our fourth graders were able to understand something about our state’s history in a new light,” said teacher Amy Harris.  “This really is part of Florida’s unique historical and cultural heritage.”
