Free school shots available at ‘Back to School 2010’

Jul 13th, 2010

LAKE WALES – Starting school is pretty complicated – just ask any family that has ever waited until the last minute to enroll a new student without the correct records or immunizations.

To help avoid disappointment and delays when school starts on Aug. 23, the Polk County Health Department is teaming up with the Lake Wales Charter Schools and several other partners to provide free back-to-school shots and physicals at “Back To School 2010.”

The event is set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 31 at Lake Wales Family YMCA, 1001 Burns Ave.

The Polk County Health Department will provide free immunizations and physicals on a first-come, first-served basis. A parent or guardian must accompany the child, and should bring the child’s current immunization record (or blue card).

“We hope to serve children who will be starting kindergarten, as well as students entering seventh grade who need the TdaP booster,” said Paula Alford, the school nurse for the Lake Wales Charter Schools. “This is a great opportunity for families to avoid the rush in August.”

Refreshments will be available as families wait, including hotdogs and drinks. Polk Health Plan representatives will be on hand to register individuals for coverage.

The event is open to any family in the greater Lake Wales area or eastern Polk County.
