Arrival/Dismissal

All students are expected to arrive at school prior to the first bell and report directly to their assigned area or to the cafeteria for breakfast.  Breakfast will be served from 7:35 AM until 7:55 AM.  After 8:00 AM only late bus students will be allowed to eat breakfast.

First Bell:                   7:50 AM

Tardy Bell:                 8:00 AM

Dismissal:                   2:20 PM

Car Riders: All car riders are issued a Car Rider Number at the beginning of the school year or when they enroll.  These numbers must be visible in the car at pick up time.  If you don't have a number the student must be checked out through the office.  The drop-off/pick up area for students is located in the front of the school in the main parking lot.  Students are NOT to be dropped off any earlier than 7:30 AM.  There will be no one to supervise your child before 7:30 AM.  Please use a parking space if you need to come into the office.  DO NOT park in the unloading zone.

Bus Riders: The bus loading/unloading area located on the West side of the school is for buses, day care vans, and other vehicles that drop off or pick up groups of students.  Please do not drive through the bus loop at any time.

Walkers: Walkers are to enter the school at the front (South side) by the main office and then report directly to their assigned area or to breakfast.

Attendance/Tardies

It is very important that your child be at school every day, unless he or she is ill.  Also, all students are expected to be in class by 8:00 am every morning.  Students who arrive late to school (after 8:00 am) must check-in at the main office.  Any student who is late three times will be given a warning.  Any future tardies may result in disciplinary action as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct.

Bringing Items to School

Students should not bring any toys or other items that are not necessary for learning.  The only time students should bring toys, games, pets, etc., is when their teacher instructs them to do so AND they have received permission from their teacher to do so (“Show and Tell”, for example).  The student will assume ALL responsibility for any items brought to school.  Items specifically NOT to be brought to school include, (but is not limited to): action figures, boom boxes, cameras, cards, electronic games, radios, sports equipment, tape recorders, toy cars, or other similar items.

Absolutely NO weapons, including toy weapons, are allowed at the bus stop, on the bus, or at school.

The Hillcrest staff recognizes the importance of continuous and effective communication.  Parents are encouraged to contact the teacher or school anytime the need arises.  The main office number is: 678-4216.

Student Agenda: Each student in grades 1-5 is given an agenda at the beginning of the school year.  This is a great tool to use for communicating back and forth with your child’s teacher.

Telephone Conference:  If you would like to speak with a teacher, then send a note or contact the main office at 678-4216.  The teacher will return your call as soon as possible.

Parent-Teacher Conference: If a conference is needed you should contact the teacher directly, either by phone or by a note, to schedule a time.  The schedule during the day does not allow for “drop-in” conferences.

Discipline Plan

 Positive Behavior Management System

Our Positive Behavior Plan at Hillcrest Elementary will provide school-wide EXPECTATIONS & RULES in specific settings to TEACH students appropriate behavior.  A REWARD SYSTEM will be used to encourage and reinforce appropriate behavior and EFFECTIVE CONSEQUENCES will be in place to discourage inappropriate behavior.

Serious Breach of Conduct

In the event that a student commits a serious breach of conduct (as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct) the student may be given an office referral.  If a student receives an office referral, the principal (or principal’s designee) will administer a consequence, which consists of a warning, a student/parent conference, in-school suspension (ISD), or out-of-school suspension.  Any time a student receives an office referral the principal or principal’s designee will attempt to contact the parent regarding the situation.

If you would like to check your child out of school early please be prepared to present a valid photo ID in the Main Office.  DO NOT go directly to the classroom and expect the teacher to release your child.  All student checkouts must be handled in the Main Office.  Students will not be released after 2:00 PM unless it is an emergency.  Also, students will not be released to anyone who does not have a valid photo ID that clearly identifies them.  Anyone checking students out must also be on the student’s Emergency Card.  No one will be allowed to checkout a student if his or her name has not been added to the Emergency Card.

When checking out a student, please do so in the Main Office.  You are required to sign your child out.  At that time your child will be called to the office.  Please wait in the office area for your child to arrive in the office before leaving campus.

When possible, medical, dental, and other appointments should be made outside of school hours.  Students who are out of class a lot, including absences and early checkouts, may not achieve the academic skills to be promoted to the next grade level.
