Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes

January 21, 2014

Lake Wales High School (Media Center)  

5:00 PM

 

Trustees Present: Chair Keith Wadsworth, Vice-Chair Danny Gill, Cindy Landen, Cheryl Garnett, Terry Fasel, Cassandra Denmark 

Staff Present:  Superintendent Jesse Jackson, Angela Heyward, Marie Cherrington-Gray, Brian Fisher, Julio Acevedo, Ken Henson, Donna Dunson, Damien Moses, Gail Quam, Anuj Saran,  

Others Present: Brenda Brader, Robin Gibson, Frederick Brinson, Emmie Furlow, Joyce Bentley, Judy Stokes

I.  CALL TO ORDER                                                        Keith Wadsworth, Chair

The meeting was called to order at 5:00pm.

II.  PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Principal Donna Dunson.

III.  APPROVAL OF WORK SESSION AND BOARD MEETING MINUTES (December 16, 2013)

Chair Wadsworth called for approval of the Work Session Minutes for December 16, 2013.  Motion to approve was made by Vice Chair Danny Gill and seconded by Trustee Terry Fasel.  Motion carried unanimously.  Chair Wadsworth called for approval of the Board Meeting Minutes for January 21, 2014.  Motion to approve was made by Vice Chair Danny Gill and seconded by Trustee Cassandra Denmark.  Motion carried unanimously.

III.  FINANCIAL REPORT                                                                Brian Fisher, CFO

Recommend approval of monthly financials as reviewed and presented at the January 21, 2014 Board of Trustees Work Session.  Motion to approve was made by Trustee Terry Fasel and seconded by Vice Chair Danny Gill.  Motion carried unanimously.

IV.  SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT                                 Jesse Jackson, Superintendent

A.  Memorandum of Agreement City of Lake Wales and LWCS

Recommend approval of the Memorandum of Agreement City of Lake Wales and LWCS as distributed and discussed at the January 21, 2014 Board of Trustees Work Session.  Motion to approve was made by Vice Chair Danny Gill and seconded by Trustee Cassandra Denmark.  Motion carried unanimously.

B.  Personnel Changes

Recommend approval of the Personnel Changes as distributed and    discussed at the January 21, 2014 Board of Trustees Work Session.  Motion to approve was made by Trustee Terry Fasel and seconded by Trustee Cassandra Denmark.  Motion carried unanimously.

V.  SCHEDULED PERSON’S ADDRESSING THE BOARD

A.  LWCS Attorney Robin Gibson addresses the Board

Mr. Frederick Brinson          (3 minute limit)

Mr. Brinson addressed the Board regarding his son Dedric Brinson and his recent actions on the basketball team trip to SC.

Ms. Emmie Furlow             (3 minute limit)

Ms. Furlow addressed the Board regarding her son Dedric Brinson and his recent actions on the basketball team trip to SC.

Others addressing the Board (3 minute limit)

Ms. Joyce Bentley from Bartow, FL on behalf of POP’s (Professional Opportunity Program for Students, Inc.).  We work with students and parents and provide 20 slots for each school.  We provide academic support, behavioral support, and we also discuss goals and dreams.  We have also visited a few college campuses with our students.  Thanks for your support and special thanks to the students and parents who came out this evening to support us.

Judy Stokes – Damsel in Defense – Ms. Stokes shared information and also a demonstration on self protecting yourself and the students.

B.  NEXT BOARD WORK SESSION AND MEETING

The February Board of Trustees Work Session and Board Meeting will be on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Hillcrest Elementary.  The Work Session will begin at 3:30 PM and the Board Meeting will begin at 5:00 PM.
