LWHS students qualify for college credit through career academy

Jul 1st, 2010

LAKE WALES – Four students in the Early Childhood and Teacher Education Career Academy at Lake Wales High School have qualified for 12 hours of college credit and professional certificates.

Rachelle Davenport, Eunique Bell, Allyson Hendry and Amanda Sikes all are 2010 graduates of LWHS. Each student earned the Early Childhood Professional Certificate, and also qualified for 12 hours of articulated credit with Polk State College.

“It’s a great credential for them to have,” said Lisa Davis, the academy director. “It gives them a staff credential similar to a Child Development Associate credential. They will be very marketable when they look for jobs.”

Another 15 students qualified for six hours of credit from PSC, and 15 students qualified for three hours of PSC credit. To receive the college credits, students must enroll at PSC after they graduate from high school.

About 100 students are enrolled in the LWHS Early Childhood and Teacher Education Career Academy. They take classes while assisting in the operation of the Little Highlander Academy, an on-site preschool for infants to children age 5.

The Little Highlander Academy uses a developmentally appropriate curriculum in a hands-on learning environment. As part of their own course work, LWHS students intern with the preschool’s professional staff of experienced teachers who hold Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials, director’s licenses and/or bachelor degrees in Family and Consumer Science.

“Mrs. Davis works endless hours to make sure her program is productive,” said Daniele Shick, LWHS assistant principal. “We truly appreciate all she does to help her students succeed.”

The Little Highlander Academy has a new $20,000 playground, and the program is open all school days, including teacher workdays. Applications for the program are available on the school’s website www.lakewaleshigh.com or in the main office of Lake Wales High.
