Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes

Those Present: Chairwoman Cassandra Denmark, Dr. Terry Fasel, Pat Cain, Cheryl Garnett, Kristine Shollenberger, Danny Gill

I.CALL TO ORDER Cassandra Denmark, Chair
Chairwoman Cassandra Denmark called the meeting to order at 5:02 PM.
II. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by 4th grader AJ Otero, Polk Avenue Elementary
Due to time constraints in the Work Session the Principals’ Report was moved to the Board Meeting:
Principal Ken Henson – Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary – Hops for 4th/5th graders – hands on. The 3rd graders will have HOPS tomorrow. 4th grade musical is tomorrow – Progress Energy Grant. 5th grade teach-in & they also went to Kennedy Space Center. Friday K-2 has Field Day.
Principal Damien Moses – Edward W. Bok Academy – Bok has 5 teachers who will be presenting at the Charter School Conference. They will be doing a presentation for Apple at this event also. E-Team will be competing with other Polk County Middle Schools. Friday the 16th – Bok Ragada – kayak & zip line. Teacher Stacie Butcher received the Garland Award for Bok. Decades Dance – after Thanksgiving – 70’s with a Scooby Doo van. The staff was more excited than the kids.
Interim Principal Jennifer Barrow – Hillcrest Elementary - K-Support tonight at 6:00pm; Tomorrow at legion Field – Turkey Football Jamboree; Wednesday – Great American Teach In. Cotillion at High Point. Thursday – Thanksgiving dinner; Friday – Hawk Hot Dog Day; STREAM Team – National Charter Schools Conference. Principal Barrow – reviewed the Charter Renewal for the Board.
Principal Donna Dunson – Lake Wales High School – Band Conference in Winter Haven – received a Excellent rating; College Academic Program – we have 5 tutors working 15 hours per week with the students. ROTC passing review was last Friday; Veteran’s Day program – Matt Elmore spoke; 6:30PM IB Meeting; Bok Academy opened their doors for LWHS to come out and talk with their students about our IB Program. We sent a letter to McLaughlin and have received no answer. Trustee Fasel advised we might have some Frostproof students that are interested. Principal Moses advised the Bok students also received letters from Bartow and Haines City; Mr. Jackson advised the tutoring program that Principal Dunson has was paid for by a donor.
Principal Barbara Jones – Janie Howard Wilson Elementary – Exploration Station after school event is going well; we are looking to add archery, drama & robotics in the future; they had a Haitian artist visiting the students and drew a painting right in front of their eyes; Mrs. Weaver is working on finishing up the art gallery sometime in February. Folk artist next week and a sand sculpture artist in January. Mya Garrett – Science Teacher received the Progress Energy Grant. Chorus sang at Lake Ashton the Chamber and Family Literacy. Honor Roll celebration is on Friday. Local Chamber has been very supportive and also Pastor Hilligoss. Board Chair Denmark visited – the kids were very intrigued to hear from her because she is from Lake Wales; Mr. Jackson – the after school programs are a tremendous support for our community. They are able to participate in these activities and also get tutoring. LWHS students came out and read to the 1st graders. Me. Jackson – one student enjoyed school so much he did not want to go home.
Principal Gail Quam – Polk Avenue Elementary - Leadership Lake Wales has been great. Celebrated PBS – expert Yo Yo folks visited the kids as a part of the reward system. Students had fun spending their Cardinal cash. ELL – Spanish Program – Mon & Wed.; 26th we start our own tutoring Mon & Wed for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Progress Energy Grant is tomorrow. Parent Conference night is here. Wed is Teach In. Mr. Jackson – visited Waters Edge with the Kindergarten class. Principal Quam – it was fun to see the residents. They have adopted our school. The kids had fun trick or treating. The students are performing in November at Lake Ashton with Hillcrest. We are really focusing on Leadership and Technology.
III. APPROVAL OF WORK SESSION AND BOARD MEETING MINUTES
(October 15, 2012)
Chairwoman Cassandra Denmark called for any additions/deletions to the October 15, 2012 Trustees Work Session and Board Meeting Minutes. There being none Chairwoman Denmark called for a motion to approve. Motion to approve the Work Session minutes was made by Trustee Pat Cain with a second by Trustee Terry Fasel. Motion to approve the Trustee Board Meeting was made by Trustee Pat Cain with a second by Trustee Danny Gill. Motion approved unanimously.
IV. FINANCIAL REPORT Brian Fisher, CFO
- Recommend approval of monthly financials as reviewed and presented at the November 12, 2012 Board of Trustees Work Session. Chairwoman Denmark asked if there were any further discussion on the monthly financial as presented by CFO Brian Fisher at the November 12, 2012 Work Session. Being none, she asked for a motion to approve the Personnel Changes. Motion to approve was made by Trustee Pat Cain and seconded by Trustee Cheryl Garnett.
V. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT Jesse Jackson, Superintendent
A. PERSONNEL CHANGES
Recommend approval of the Personnel Changes as distributed and discussed at the November 12, 2012 Board of Trustees Work Session. Superintendent Jackson called for a motion to approve the Personnel Changes. Motion to approve was made by Trustee Danny Gill and was seconded by Trustee Cheryl Garnett.
VI. NEXT BOARD WORK SESSION AND MEETING
The December Board of Trustee Work Session and Board Meeting will be on Monday, December 17, 2012 at Edward W. Bok Academy. The Work Session will begin at 3:30 PM and the Board Meeting will begin at 5:00 PM.

IX. TRUSTEES REPORTS
Trustee Kristine Shollenberger thanks Trustee Fasel for the opportunity to attend the NASA Workshop on Warner Campus. Trustee Danny Gill commented the Principal Selection Committee was great.
Principal Quam who is the chair of the Principal Selection committee talked about the survey, their meeting and number of interviewees selected. They also met this week and created interview questions.
Trustee Fasel asked if Hillcrest Elementary resolved the class size issue. Interim Principal Barrow advised this issue has been resolved and class size has been met.
X. OTHER BUSINESS FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER
Chairwoman Denmark called for a motion to approve the Charter Renewal as presented by Interim Principal Jennifer Barrow with input from the other Principals. Motion to approve was made by Trustee Danny Gill and seconded by Trustee Terry Fasel. Capital Campaign Chair / Foundation Chair Gibson provided an update: Three (3) schools are at 100% and the others have a strong majority; Central Office Staff is at 100%; Board of Trustees and the Foundation have a substantial majority also. We are now in the quiet phase of the campaign – we received $75,000 last week and $2M so far. We appreciate the community involvement and school participation. We will have the EXPO on January 19th at the LWHS. Highlander Plaza is under construction. We are folding in the Annual Giving Campaign. We would like to pledge 3 years out – ok to count towards the campaign. We would like for this to be a part of the culture in our community. We will be celebrating 100 Years of Public Schools in Lake Wales and also the 10 Year Anniversary of the Lake Wales Charter Schools (from 2003 to current). Thanks to everyone for their participation!

LAKE WALES –– Hillcrest Elementary kindergarten students are celebrating the end of school by reading their own copies of “Change The World Before Bedtime” by Mark Kimball Moulton, Josh Chalmers and Karen Good.
LAKE WALES – Age and experience triumphed over youth and energy when Janie Howard Wilson staff faced fifth graders in the elementary school’s annual spring softball game last week. The adults won the game 22-8.
LAKE WALES – Reading consultant Dr. Richard Culyer poses with five students who were recognized Friday (May 17) at the Lake Wales Charter Schools’ Culyer Celebration.
