Polk Avenue honors Blake Appleton

Apr 27th, 2012

LAKE WALES – Polk Avenue Elementary honored student Blake Appleton with its “Leader of Courage” award Friday (April 27) during a school-wide Friday Forum.

Principal Gail Quam (left) and Assistant Principal Metta O’Bryant (right) presented a special plaque to Blake and his family; Lake Wales City Commissioner Terrye Howell gave Blake a key to the city.

Members of the Lake Wales Fire Department were present for the ceremony.  Most students wore hand-made fire hats to honor Blake’s love of firefighters, and several classes (including the Pre-K class pictured here) made banners honoring Blake, who is battling cancer.

Polk Avenue Elementary participates in the school-wide “The Leader in Me” program designed to help students and staff build on the leadership skills found in Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s best-selling book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.”
